The Challenge: Building a brand-new hyper-local digital marketplace and directory from the ground up to connect parents with children’s activities.
The Location: Vienna, Virginia

End-to-end product design and launch strategy for a local start-up.
I partnered with a female entrepreneur to design, brand, and build a bespoke, highly interactive web platform from absolute zero. Serving as the sole creative lead, I delivered a complete brand identity system, custom character illustrations to establish an inviting tone, and a functional directory database that made it effortless for parents to discover and filter local youth activities.
Services & Deliverables:
Complete Brand Identity & Visual System
Bespoke Responsive Web Development & Directory Architecture
Custom Vector Illustrations & Character Designs
Information Architecture & User Flow Mapping
The Outcome: Successfully brought a new local digital product to market, giving the founder a fully operational, monetizable platform that she successfully owned and ran for multiple years as a trusted community resource.
02 / Understanding the Problem
Bootstrapping a multi-sided platform from the ground up.
In 2015, the founder identified a massive pain point for parents in Northern Virginia: finding fragmented kids' classes, camps, and events required digging through dozens of outdated individual business sites. However, she faced a classic marketplace hurdle:
Zero Existing Infrastructure: There was no brand name, no design system, and no web presence to establish immediate trust with users.
Two Critical User Groups: The platform had to appeal simultaneously to busy, tired parents looking for clear information, and to local businesses who needed to see the value in listing their activities.
The Need for Approachable Authority: The site needed to feel playful, warm, and community-minded, while functioning like a robust, professional search directory.
03 / The Strategy & Execution
Humanizing data through custom illustration and seamless UX.
Because the budget was lean and the timeline was fast, I operated as a full-stack design and development team. I relied heavily on my traditional design foundations to ensure the brand's layout and typographic choices felt premium, even while managing complex data filtering.
Step 1: Crafting an Approachable Brand Identity
To differentiate the platform from sterile, corporate search directories, I built a vibrant visual system centered around custom, warm illustrations. These assets humanized the digital experience, creating an immediate emotional connection with parents and positioning the site as a friendly neighborhood guide.
Step 2: Information Architecture & UX Mapping
A directory is only as good as its search experience. I mapped out intuitive user flows that allowed parents to filter activities by age, location, and date in just a few clicks. I translated these low-fidelity structures into a clean, modern user interface that prioritized fast scanning on both mobile and desktop.
Step 3: Bespoke Web Development & Launch
I handled the end-to-end development of the platform, building a responsive database site that the founder could easily update and manage on her own. Every illustration and UI component was optimized for performance, ensuring the product launched on time and with full functional integrity.
04 / The Impact
Empowering a solo founder to enter the market.
While long-term business trajectories naturally evolve, the execution and delivery of the product achieved every core metric for client success:
From Concept to Market: Transformed a raw business idea into a living, fully realized digital product within a highly competitive local market.
Sustained Founder Ownership: Equipped a solo entrepreneur with a professional-grade platform that she successfully scaled, operated, and sustained for multiple years.
Community Utility: Streamlined the discovery process for hundreds of local families, proving the power of blending custom storytelling illustration with functional UX engineering.
